On the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 18 April with Dr. Barham Salih, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, expressed his condemnation in the strongest terms of Israel’s appointment on 15 April of an ambassador to the northwestern region of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the so-called “Somaliland.” He affirmed that this step is null and void, illegal, and constitutes a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, as well as a clear breach of the Charter of the United Nations and the rules of international law, and a measure devoid of any legal effect.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the announcement by the US President on 16 April of a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon, set to take effect at midnight. He described this development as positive, particularly with regard to alleviating the suffering of the Lebanese people, and expressed deep appreciation for the diplomatic efforts exerted by a number of Arab states in advancing this agreement.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the signing by representatives of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State of Annex No. (1) to the Unified Development Agreement, which includes the adoption of the state’s general expenditure tables for the first time in more than 13 years. He described this as an important positive development towards achieving stability and development in the country for the benefit of the Libyan people.

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector) expresses its strong condemnation and profound denunciation of the Israeli occupation authorities’ approval of the establishment of 34 new settlements in the West Bank, in a dangerous escalatory step that constitutes a grave and flagrant violation of international law, including the relevant Geneva Conventions, as well as resolutions of international legitimacy issued by the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly, all of which affirm the illegality of settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, held a telephone call with President of the Lebanese Government Dr Nawaf Salam, during which he renewed his full solidarity with Lebanon in the face of the brutal and barbaric Israeli aggression it is enduring. He affirmed the necessity of including Lebanon in the ceasefire agreement recently reached between the United States and Iran.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran on a two-week ceasefire, affirming that it constitutes an important step in the right direction that must be upheld and not squandered, in order to de-escalate tensions and prevent the region from sliding into catastrophic scenarios.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, held a telephone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, during which he expressed his full solidarity with Lebanon its government and people in the face of the ongoing Israeli attacks.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, condemned in the strongest terms the unprecedented and barbaric Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which have resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of innocent civilians, in a flagrant violation and grave breach of all international laws. The Secretary-General accused Israel of persistently seeking to sabotage the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.
